Alice in Wonderland History

Is it really possible that this story is over 140 years old?  It’s true, Alice’s Adventures  in Wonderland was first published in 1865 by English author Charles  Dodgson under the  pen name  Lewis Carroll.  It is a true children’s fantasy classic.  Dodgson, it is told, delighted 3 little girls with the story as they and a friend rowed leisurely up the River Thames one day.

After persistently asking the Reverend Dodgson to write the story down for them, the girls finally convinced him to write Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and three years later, it was published to great acclaim.  If you want to read the story in it’s original form, and see some of the original illustrations, go to:  http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rgs/alice-table.html.

Many of the characters in the story were allusions  to friends and other people in and around Dodgson’s life.  There are also many parodies and obscure references to mathematics, language and history that are often overlooked because it appears to be just a children’s story.

Alice has been written and adapted for television and movies many times, and most versions stay true to the illogical fantasy theme that was the style of the original work.  A contemporary version of the story has been made into a 3-D movie distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, starring Johnny Depp, and will be released in early 2010.  Depp is cast as The Mad Hatter, and should really bring Wonderland to life!

The story has also been embraced by many segments of popular culture over the years.  From literature, to art, to theater and more,  Alice has inspired many works.  If you are ever in Central Park in New York City, go to the south-east part of the park and you will see a giant sculpture of Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the March Hare.

And if you were around in the late 1960’s, you will remember the Jefferson Airplane’s hit song “White Rabbit”, with it’s obvious references to hallucinogenic drugs, and psychedelic culture. Yeah, I know, it has nothing to do with costumes, but it is some cool old stuff to watch.  In case you were not around…..here’s what that was like!  Trippy, man!
